Conquest Oil is a family-orientated business and has been supplying oil and lubricants since 1960.
The business began with humble beginnings. To start with it was two men, a father and son team – Percy Craddock and his son Peter. Peter had only just left school. They had one truck and were primarily engaged delivering Paraffin in and around the mid-Bedfordshire area. At that time oil delivery trucks had very short hoses and the trucks had to drive right up to a customer’s tank to complete a delivery. If the lorry couldn’t reach the tank, the only alternative was to decant the oil from the lorry into a churn and to carry the churn by hand to the customer’s tank.
As time went on other members of the Craddock family joined the business as demand continued to grow. More drivers were taken-on and the fleet grew as did the delivery area - now taking-in all of Bedfordshire. After Peter married Christina, still in the early days of the business, she also joined and looked after the admin side of things. By the late 1990’s their son Paul, having gained a business degree, also came on-board, therefore entering the third generation of the Craddock family. A fresh period of expansion then began.
The business now (as of August 2019) has a fleet of 22 delivery trucks and 1 articulated tanker truck and supplies more customers than ever before, not only covering all of Bedfordshire, but most of the surrounding counties too; Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire...and parts of other counties as well. Fortunately today’s trucks have much longer hoses allowing us to reach most peoples tanks much easier. We also have a range of vehicle sizes allowing us access to most locations and giving us the flexibility to deliver large volumes to our commercial and agricultural customers as well as smaller volumes to domestic customers with small tanks in their gardens or outhouses. Our oil is not only used for heating homes and offices, but also for keeping agricultural machinery going (especially at harvest time) and keeping heavy commercial machinery running and keeping lorry fleets on the road. We deliver Paraffin, Kerosene, DERV and Gas-Oil.
Over the years various family members and other staff have been and gone, but the one constant is Peter who is still with the company even today - albeit it is his son Paul who has now taken-on day-to-day control and oversight.
On 1st October 2018, the business entered a new and exciting phase when we began a collaboration with Oil NRG Ltd. [ www.oilnrg.co.uk ] They too have a background as a family orientated oil supply business headed by the Peart family. Originally operating in the north of the country their history in the oil distribution business goes back even further than the Craddock’s, going back to the 1930’s! They too go back three generations.
Oil NRG have been “recognized as one of the UK’s most inspiring firms in a high-profile list from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG)” and they are considered one of the market leaders in the industry. Having been recognised as one of UK’s most inspiring firms, the “1000 Companies to Inspire Britain 2017” report is an annual celebration of the fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium-sized enterprises (SME's) in the UK.
Jeremy Royle, Managing Director at Oil NRG commented: “Oil NRG are delighted to have been recognised in the ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ report. A significant achievement for Oil NRG, and the only oil distributor to be included. As an independent bulk fuel distributor, it is testament to the outstanding hard work, experience and professionalism of our whole team, providing market leading services to our customers.”
Oil NRG is run by CEO Roger Peart. They have been expanding their business in recent years and although they are based in Hartlepool, they now have a presence in Tyneside, Teesside, Yorkshire, Humberside, Lincolnshire and East Anglia – and now with Conquest Oil also on-board the coverage now includes parts of the Home-Counties and parts of the Midlands as well. This greater presence gives greater buying power from our suppliers which means we can buy-in our oil more cheaply. It means economies of scale in the admin functions of the businesses and gives greater resilience in getting to customers in those areas where there is overlap between depots – especially important at times of high demand. All these things give greater scope for passing savings onto customers and giving good service to all our customers.
As a result of these recent changes ‘Conquest Oil Company’ is now a member of the Oil NRG Group and continues to trade as ‘Conquest Oil NRG’.
